14 Saint Francis St, St Augustine FL, 32084
It’s no secret that St. Augustine is an incredible historic gem and is the oldest European settlement in the country. When you have so much to treasure and preserve in a community, it makes sense to have an organization dedicated to discovering, saving, and sharing as much information as possible! The Saint Augustine Historical Society started back in 1883 by a group of local individuals. They were originally interested in natural history. In the years that followed, the organization went by a variety of different names. Eventually settling on The St. Augustine Historical Society in 1953. In the almost century and a half since its start, the Society has “fostered interest in, and appreciation of, the history and culture of St. Augustine, St. John’s County, and North Florida.”
The St. Augustine Historical Society presides over several historic buildings in the area, including two that are used for events: The Gonzales-Alvarez House (The Oldest House) and the Fernandez-Llambias House. These, along with the others, represent eras gone by, hosting collections, educational programming, and research to preserve the history of St. Augustine.
The Oldest House is the oldest documented First Spanish Period Colonial House in Florida. They built it entirely of coquina stone around the year 1720. Although subsequent British and American owners added to the structure, it was restored in the early 1920s to its early 19th-century configuration. Today, this National Historic Landmark is used for exhibitions and events.
The Fernandez-Llambias House is located half a block west. It has plenty of gathering space and a catering kitchen that makes it ideal for smaller receptions. The house (dating back to 1763) is also made of coquina and opens to a walled garden.
There are two ways to use the space available at the St. Augustine Historical Society for a wedding. The first is to use it to host a beautiful ceremony exclusively, with a cocktail hour and reception held offsite. This option can accommodate up to 250 guests. The second option is to host both your reception and your ceremony for a group of up to 130 guests.
When you celebrate at The Oldest House Gardens, you’ll be beneath the twisting boughs of an incredible oak tree. The quiet courtyard features views of the historic home, as well as lovely landscaping. The Llambias House Gardens are also available for ceremonies and al fresco receptions. They feature details like a lush arbor, a colonial balcony, spiraling brick favors, and a fairy tale wishing well.
Both properties available through the St. Augustine Historical Society are lush with landscaping, grassy courtyards, and beautiful trees. Combined with the incredible historic architecture of the homes, there are plenty of unique ways to use the grounds for spectacular photos. If you’re looking for gorgeous outdoor photos, this could be a great venue for you and your partner!
